2015 Game Recaps

GAME 21-MANIAX 3, Grosse Pointe Avengers 1

It wasn't exactly pretty, but the Maniax got the job done in tough weather conditions to secure their fourth straight win.  Cade Perrin went the distance on the mound despite battling constant mist and wet baseballs.  Perrin allowed no earned runs while striking out five and walking four.  Offensively, the Maniax had runners in scoring position pretty much all day but stranded ten runners on base despite some solid hitting overall.  CJ Wagner sparked the troops with a double and a single, while Brian Butler and DJ Ledsworth each added a pair of singles.  Bret Hamel drove in the first run of the game with a bases loaded "walk", followed by a perfect SAC bunt RBI by Cade Perrin to make it 2-0.  After the Avengers pulled within one run, Kyle Wernert drove in Perrin in the top of the 6th with an RBI single to make it 3-1 and the score would hold.  Jared Showers added a double for the Maniax, while Brady Chicone pitched in with a single.  The win puts the Maniax at 11-8-2 overall and 5-5-2 in the MABF Upper A Division.  NOW OFF TO MYRTLE BEACH WE GO!!!!

GAME 20-MANIAX 14, Bay Area Bulls 6

Never.  Give.  Up.

The Maniax were being shut down on just three hits after six innings in this one, losing 5-0 heading into the top of the 7th.  What transpired at that point was an incredible display of aggressive hitting combined with patient at bats as the Ax Men hammered out an incredible 14 runs to win the big MABF Upper A matchup.  Brian Butler was the hitting standout for the Maniax, going 3 for 5 with a single, a pair of doubles, and five RBI's.  The first double was a huge three-run bases clearing shot to give the Maniax a 6-5 lead in the 7th inning.  Butler also flashed the leather with a clutch diving grab in right field to end the game.  Nolan Petz continued his recent hot streak with a single, double, and three RBI's, also all coming in the key 7th inning.  Other Maniax contributing in the win were Jackson Allen with a single, two RBI's, and two runs scored, Brady Chicone with a single and two runs scored, and Cade Perrin with an RBI double and a run scored.  Kyle Wernert added a single, and RBI, and two runs scored, while Jared Showers rounded out the hitting with a single.  Another clutch at bat in the game came when CJ Wagner laid down a perfect squeeze bunt on a very tough pitch to hit, driving in Perrin AND Bret Hamel, who was flying all the way around from second base and never hit the brakes.  Showers got the start on the mound and allowed three earned runs in the first four innings, striking out one.  Wagner picked up the win in relief of Showers, throwing 2 1/3 innings and allowing no earned runs with one strike out.  Hamel secured the win in the 7th by getting a pair of outs with runners on base.  The win moves the Maniax record to 10-8-2 overall and 4-5-2 in the MABF Upper A Division.

GAME 19-MANIAX 9, Port Huron Red Dawgs 2

The Maniax played a solid overall game and rode the strong arm of Brendan O'Connor in the MABF crossover victory.  O'Connor tossed a complete game, striking out six and walking none while allowing eight hits.  Offensively the Maniax got good production up and down the lineup, led by Bret Hamel's fourth consecutive two-hit game.  Hamel had a double, single, RBI, and a pair of runs scored, while Nolan Petz continued his hot hitting with a double, an RBI, and two runs scored as well.  Cade Perrin rapped out a pair of singles, an RBI, and scored a run as well, while O'Connor had a single and a run scored.  DJ Ledsworth added a single and an RBI in the win, while Jackson Allen had a perfectly excecuted squeeze bunt for an RBI.  Kyle Wernert and Brady Chicone pitched in with sacrifice flies and and RBI as well.  The Maniax are now 9-8-2 overall.

GAME 18-MANIAX 5, Sterling Heights Nationals 0

The Maniax took on the undefeated Nationals and came away with a big 5-0 win behind the arm of Cade Perrin.  Perrin went the distance in the six-inning affair, striking out five and walking two.  Perrin allowed just four hits to a solid hitting Nationals team, and all hits were singles.  Offensively, Bret Hamel was 2 for 3 with a single, double, and two runs scored, while Nolan Petz hammered a clutch two-out, two-run triple to give the Maniax a 2-0 lead in the 2nd inning.  Brian Butler followed Petz with an RBI single and the Maniax built a lead they wouldn't relinquish.  Brady Chicone and Jared Showers also added singles in the win, while Brendan O'Connor and DJ Ledsworth each drove runs with RBI groundouts.  The win evens the Maniax record at 8-8-2 overall and 3-5-2 in the MABF Upper A division.

GAME 17-Washington Senators 8, MANIAX 5

The Maniax jumped out to a 5-1 lead, but a huge 7-run 5th inning by the Senators proved to be the difference in the 8-5 Maniax loss.  Jared Showers threw the ball well but took the loss on the mound, despite allowing just one earned run out of the eight runs scored.  Brendan O'Connor threw the final 1 2/3 innings in relief of Showers.  Offensively for the Ax men, Brendan O'Connor put the good guys up 3-0 with a clutch two-out, two-run double in the first inning, but the clutch hits failed to come after that.  Brian Butler went 2-5 with a pair of singles in his first game as a lead-off hitter for the Maniax, and Bret Hamel also added a pair of singles in the game.  Showers, DJ Ledsworth, and Cade Perrin each added a single and a run scored, while Brady Chicone rounded out the hitting attack with a single.  The loss dropped the Maniax overall record to 7-8-2 and 2-5-2 in the MABF Upper A Division.

 

GAME 16-MANIAX 9, Clinton Township Yellow Jackets 9

The Maniax jumped out to a big 9-1 lead after a big 8-run 4th inning, but couldn't hold on to the lead as the Jackets battled back and earned a 9-9 tie.  Cade Perrin started on the mound for the Maniax and threw a very solid four innings.  Perrin allowed four runs, one of which was earned, while striking out six and walking two.  Bret Hamel and CJ Wagner offered relief help for Perrin, with Wagner throwing a very solid 2 2/3 innings and allowing just one run.  Offensively, the bats came alive as the Maniax knocked out 12 hits, led by Perrin's three singles and an RBI.  Jared Showers, Nolan Petz, Brian Butler, and Hamel each added two singles, with Butler and Showers driving in two runs each and Hamel and Petz driving in one apiece.  Brendan O'Connor rounded out the offensive attack with a single and two runs scored, while DJ Ledsworth and Kyle Wernert each added an RBI.  The tie puts the Maniax overall record for the season at 7-7-2 and in the MABF Upper A division they are now 2-4-2.

 

GAME 15-MANIAX 4, Grosse Pointe Avengers 0

Jared Showers shook off a couple of tough outings on the mound to put together an absolute gem in this one.  Showers fired a complete game, four-hit shutout and struck out five while walking no one.  The Avengers only managed to get a runner into scoring position in two of the seven innings.  Tyler Bartolomucci supplied much of the offense for the Maniax, driving in three runs with a double and a single, while Brendan O'Connor scored a pair of runs and also added a single and a double of his own.  Brady Chicone joined the single/double club as well and added an RBI and a run scored in the win.  Other Maniax collecting hits were Kyle Wernert and DJ Ledsworth, and Ledsworth scored a run as well.  The win pushed the Maniax record to 7-7-1 overall and 2-4-1 in the MABF.

GAME 14-Motor City Riversharks 3, MANIAX 2

The Maniax took on the #1 seed in the AA State Tournament and gave them a heck of a run for their money, but the Riversharks walked away with a tight 3-2 win.  Cade Perrin threw an incredible game for the Maniax, firing all six innings, striking out five and walking just two.  Perrin held the potent Riversharks offense to just six hits and only one of the three runs allowed was earned.  Bret Hamel led the offense with a single, an RBI double, and a run scored, while Brian Butler doubled and scored the other Maniax run.  DJ Ledsworth, Nolan Petz, and Brendan O'Connor added singles in the loss.  The Maniax are now 6-7-1 overall and finish the AA State Tournament with the #7 ranking out of 24 teams.  Great job Maniax!

 

GAME 13-Michigan Blast 9, MANIAX 1

The Maniax run of solid games ended against a very good Blast team in game three of pool play at the AA State Tournament.  Tyler Bartolomucci took the loss on the mound throwing four innings and striking out one, and he received relief help at the end of the game from Brendan O'Connor.  Offensively, the Maniax could only manage four singles from Jared Showers, Brian Butler, DJ Ledsworth, and CJ Wagner in the game.  O'Connor scored the only run for the Maniax after reaching on a walk and getting driven in on a Bartolomucci ground out.  The loss pushed the tournament record to 2-1 and the Maniax qualified for day three as the #8 seed out of 24 teams.  Overall record now stands at 6-6-1.

 

GAME 12-MANIAX 10, Elite Hitmen 4

The Maniax are now 2-0 in the AA State Tournament behind one of the best overall wins on the season.  Good pitching, clutch hitting, and solid defense led to the win, highlighted by CJ Wagners 5 1/3 innings of great pitching.  Wagner allowed just one earned run (has it landed yet, CJ?) while striking out four.  Jared Showers picked up the save in relief of Wagner, going 1 2/3 innings and striking out one.  Jackson Allen led the Maniax offense, going 2-2 with two singles, three RBI's, and a clutch squeeze bunt in the 2nd inning.  Brady Chicone was also dominant with the bat, going 3-3 with a double and two RBIs, and Kyle Wernert also added a pair of singles and an RBI in the win.  Tyler Bartolomucci added an RBI single, while Brian Butler, Cade Perrin, and Bret Hamel each added a single to round out the hitting attack.  The Maniax are now 6-5-1 on the season.

GAME 11-MANIAX 8, Michigan Freeze 0

The Maniax started the AA State Tournament in style with a big 8-0 opening game win over the Michigan Freeze behind the arm of Bret Hamel.  Hamel threw all four innings for the Maniax, striking out three and allowing no runs.  Hamel got some help from his defense throughout the game, highlighted by a big 4-6-3 double play from Tyler Bartolomucci and Jared Showers as well as Brady Chicone gunning down a base stealer for the 7th time this season.  Offensively, Cade Perrin had a clutch two-out, two-strike, bases loaded 2-run single in the first inning to set the tone for the Maniax.  Hamel and Showers each added RBI doubles in the game that saw the Maniax draw 11 walks and get hit by pitch FOUR times.  The win evens the Maniax overall record at 5-5-1 for the season.

GAME 10-Bay Area Bulls 6, MANIAX 3

The Maniax couldn't overcome a big five-run 4th inning by the Bulls as they dropped a tough MABF League game 6-3.  Brendan O'Connor took the loss on the mound for the Maniax, hurling the first four innings and striking out one.  CJ Wagner threw a scoreless three innings in relief, striking out two.  Offensively for the Maniax, Jared Showers contintued to swing a hot bat, going 2-3 with a double and a run scored.  Kyle Wernert, DJ Ledsworth, and Wagner each added a pair of singles, with Ledsworth driving in a pair of runs and Wernert driving in one.  Other Maniax collecting hits on the game were Tyler Bartolomucci and Cade Perrin, with Brian Butler drawing three walks.  The Maniax are now 4-5-1 overall and 1-4-1 in the MABF.

 

GAME 9-Clinton Township Yellow Jackets 7, MANIAX 0

The Maniax ran into some more tough pitching and had a hard time getting the offense going in the MABF loss to the Yellow Jackets.  Brian Butler had the lone Maniax hit when he drove a deep double to left-center field in the 5th inning.  CJ Wagner drew a pair of walks in the loss, but that's as far as the offensive highlights would go in this one for the Maniax.  Tyler Bartolomucci started on the mound and took the loss, hurling 2 1/3 innings and striking out two.  Bret Hamel threw 2 2/3 innings of relief and allowed just two unearned runs, striking out one.  Nolan Petz threw a scoreless final two innings for the Ax, striking out one.  The loss drops the Maniax to 4-4-1 overall and 1-3-1 in the MABF Upper A Division.

 

GAME 8-Clinton Township Yellow Jackets 3, MANIAX 1

The Maniax once again seemed to have runners on base all game but were unable to come up with the timely hits in the 3-1 loss to the Yellow Jackets.  Cade Perrin took the loss on the mound despite allowing just one earned run in five innings pitched.  Perrin struck out two in the loss.  DJ Ledsworth pitched two scoreless innings of relief of Perrin, striking out two.  Perrin was also the standout at the plate, going 2-3 with an RBI single and a double, while CJ Wagner added a single and a run scored.  Other Maniax collecting singles in the loss were Jared Showers, Nolan Petz, and Ledsworth.  The Maniax are now 4-3-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the MABF Upper A Division.

 

GAME 7-MANIAX 5, Grosse Pointe Avengers 5

The Maniax overcame leaving TWELVE men on base in this one to battle back for a late 5-5 tie.  Kyle Wernert and Bret Hamel started the 7th inning rally with back to back one-out singles.  Brian Butler then drove in Wernert with a single of his own, and Cade Perrin dropped down a perfect squeeze bunt to drive in Hamel with the tying run.  Perrin added a single and a run scored earlier in the game, while Tyler Bartolomucci was 2-4 with a run scored and an RBI.  CJ Wagner continued his hot hitting with a 2-2 effort, and Jared Showers was 2-4 with a single and an RBI double.  Wernert finished 2-3 on the game.  On the mound, the Maniax had a quartet of pitchers combine in the tie.  Showers, Hamel, Wagner, and Bartolomucci all saw mound time, with Bartolomucci pitching the final inning to clinch the tie.  The Maniax are 4-2-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the league after the tie.

 

GAME 6-Washington Senators 9, MANIAX 1

The Ax Men had MANY opportunities early in this one to take a lead and break it open, but just couldn't manage the clutch hit as the Senators pulled away late for the lopsided win.  Overall on the game, the Maniax left ten runners on base, including eight in scoring position.  Brendan O'Connor took the loss on the mound but pitched a solid four innings.  O'Connor struck out one and allowed two earned runs.  CJ Wagner pitched the final three innings, striking out four and walking none.  Offensively, Bret Hamel went 3-4 with a pair of doubles, but no other Ax player could manage more than one hit in the game.  Jared Showers, Kyle Wernert, Cade Perrin, DJ Ledsworth, CJ Wagner, and Nolan Petz each managed a single, with O'Connor driving in the lone Maniax run with a groundout in the 2nd inning.  The Maniax are now 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the league.

 

GAME 5-Thames Valley Tigers 10, MANIAX 2

The Maniax fell behind early in this one and just never recovered as they fell to the Thames Valley Tigers 10-2 in the final of the Mid-Michigan Bandits Tournament.  Jared Showers took the loss on the mound for the Maniax and got some relief help from CJ Wagner and Cade Perrin.  Perrin stood out for the Maniax on the hill, allowing just one run in his 3 1/3 innings of work.  Perrin struck out one and walked none.  Offensively, Kyle Wernert had a big two-run double in the first inning but the Maniax couldn't manage to get on the board after that.  Wernert also had a single in the loss, while DJ Ledsworth added a double, Wagner had a pair of singles, and Showers added a single.  The Maniax finished as runners-up in the tournament and are now 4-1 on the season.

 

GAME 4-MANIAX 10, Thames Valley Tigers 4

The Maniax and Tigers squred off in a battle of unbeaten teams to close out pool play, and the Maniax came away with a big 10-4 win.  Tyler Bartolomucci was stellar on the mound in his first start for the Maniax, throwing four innings and allowing just one unearned run.  Barty struck out two and walked two.  Brendan O'Connor threw the final inning for the Maniax, allowing two earned runs and walking one.  O'Connor and Bartolomucci had the big hits in the game on offense as well, with O'Connor keying a huge two out rally with a 2-run single to give the Maniax the led in the 2nd inning.  Barty's big hit came a couple innings later in the top of the 4th as he laced a two run double down the left field line to pad the lead for the Maniax.  Nolan Petz and Jared Showers each added RBI singles as well.  Other Maniax contributing in the win were CJ Wagner and DJ Ledsworth each with a single and two runs scored, Brady Chicone with a single and a run scored, and Bret Hamel and Brian Butler each adding a single. The Maniax are now 4-0 on the season.

GAME 3-MANIAX 8, Swartz Creek Royals 4

This one started out rough for the Maniax as the Royals pushed across three runs in the top of the first, but the Ax Men responded with a big two-out, four run rally of their own in the bottom of the first.  Brian Butler and Cade Perrin contributed RBI singles in the rally, but the big hit came from DJ Ledsworth as he drove in Kyle Wernert and Perrin with a big two-out, two-run single to give the Maniax a lead they would never relinquish.  Jackson Allen and Brady Chicone each added squeeze bunt RBI's, and Tyler Bartolomucci and Butler each finished with a pair of singles and two runs scored.  Brendan O'Connor added a single and a run scored, while Wernert pitched in with two runs scored.  CJ Wagner shook of a tough first inning to pick up the win on the mound, hurling four innings and striking out three.  Bret Hamel once again came in to close things out for the Maniax, earning a save by throwing two innings.  Hamel allowed one earned run and struck out three.  The Maniax are now 3-0 on the season.

GAME 2-MANIAX 11, Birch Run Pathers 1

The Maniax boys got the Mid-Michigan Tournament started in style with an impressive 11-1 mercy rule win over Birch run, 11-1.  Cade Perrin started on the mound and threw 4 innings of no-hit baseball, allowing just one earned run and striking out two.  Bret Hamel threw the final two innings for the Maniax and struck out two.  The pitching duo combined for a one-hitter in the win.  Jared Showers sparked the offense with a 2-2 day, contributing a double, two RBI's, and two runs scored.  Brian Butler added a pair of singles and an RBI, while CJ Wagner scored three runs.  Other Maniax collecting hits on the day were Hamel with a single, Tyler Bartolomucci with an RBI single, and Nolan Petz with an RBI single as well.  The patient Maniax hitters were able to draw eight walks on the game.  The Maniax are now 2-0 overall.

GAME 1-MANIAX 5, Bay Area Bulls 4

The Maniax started off the season on a high note by putting together a solid 5-4 win over a very good Bay Area Bulls team behind the arms of Brendan O'Connor and Jared Showers.  O'Connor picked up the win on the mound, throwing the first 4 2/3 innings and allowing four runs...none of which were earned.  O'Connor struck out one and walked just two hitters in the game, allowing six hits.  Jared Showers struck out two and walked none in his 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, earning the first save of the season.  Offensively, Tyler Bartolomucci went 2-3 with two runs scored in his first career game as a member of the Maniax, and Showers added a double and a pair of runs scored in the win.  Bret Hamel had a single and a run scored in his Ax debut, and Brian Butler added a pair of RBI groundouts.  Kyle Wernert had a single and a perfectly executed squeeze bunt for an RBI, and DJ Ledsworth and Nolan Petz each added hits for the Maniax, who are now 1-0 on the season.
